While many of the most popular business book authors turn out a title almost every year, there are a few like Jim Champy who spend years researching between titles, and then turn out a classic. Champy’s latest book, Outsmart! How to Do What Your Competitors Can’t promises to be another winner.
Jim Champy spent his time with companies that have experienced super-high growth for at least three straight years to see what strategies led to this growth. One of the strategies that may at first seem counter intuitive is that they stay focused on what they do best, rather than on their competition. Their main focus is on their customers and how they can solve customer problems.
In a recent interview with Champy, we asked how managers deal with mistakes and the risk of failure when leading a fast-growing company. The short version of Champy’s answer was that “leaders of high-growth businesses might be facing life-and-death situations every day, but they don’t even think about it. Their passion overrides their fear.”
